Cardura XL (doxazosin sr) is an alpha blocker used to facilitate urination when urination is difficult due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

This product is the extended-release version of regular Cardura. Unlike regular Cardura, which is used to treat high blood pressure as well as to facilitate urination, patients should not buy Cardura XL to lower blood pressure.

About BPH

Benign prostatic hyperplasia describes the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. The prostate naturally becomes larger as men age, with some reports suggesting size can begin to increase around age 25. BPH very rarely produces symptoms in men under age 40. About half of men age 50 experience symptoms, and about 90 percent of men over age 80. The reason prostates enlarge is unknown.

What is known is that the condition can cause discomfort, be disruptive, and lead to very serious complications. Symptoms often include:

• Increased frequency of urination
• Urgent need to urinate
• Frequent nighttime urination
• Difficulty starting to urinate
• Weak urine stream
• Stopping and restarting urination
• Excessive dribbling at the end of urination
• Inability to fully empty the bladder

The above happen because the prostate is pressing on the urethra, restricting urine flow. Blocked urination can cause other problems as well, including urinary tract infections, kidney issues, and bladder stones.

Cardura XL does not address prostate size; it will not slow its enlargement or shrink it. Rather, patients buy Cardura XL for its muscle-relaxing properties, which affect both the bladder and the prostate, making urination easier. Other medications will likely be used to directly address the prostate itself, or, failing that, surgery or other medical procedures may be tried.

Do not buy Cardura XL for young men under age 18; effects are unknown and the issues are very unlikely to be related to BPH.

Using Cardura XL

Cardura XL comes in tablets of either 4 mg or 8 mg strengths. As they're extended-release tablets they must be swallowed whole; do not split, crush, dissolve or otherwise damage them.

Men who aren't currently taking Cardura will always be started on 4 mg. Tablets are ideally taken in the morning with breakfast. After three or four weeks treatment should be evaluated, and if symptoms are still bothersome dosage may be increased to 8 mg per day, again taken in the morning with breakfast. If tablets are missed for several consecutive days, treatment should restart with 4 mg again.

Some men buy Cardura XL after taking regular Cardura, which is taken twice per day. Treatment in this case usually, but not always, starts with 4 mg Cardura XL. To switch, take the morning dose of regular Cardura, skip the evening dose, and take 4 mg of Cardura XL the next morning.

While men are advised not to buy Cardura XL to treat hypertension, it will lower blood pressure to some degree. While not a big concern for most men with normal to high blood pressure, it does sometimes present issues for those with low to the low-end of normal blood pressure. Patients should be aware of, and alert for, symptoms of hypotension during treatment.

Use of Cardura XL with a PDE-5 inhibitor---often used to treat to treat erectile dysfunction, such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis)---can pose significant risk of low blood pressure. If these medications must be used, start with the lowest possible dose. Dosage can be gradually increased over time as long as no symptoms of hypotension develop.

Finally, some men who buy Cardura XL are being treated for high blood pressure. Be sure the prescribing doctor is aware of all hypertension treatments being taken. Cardura XL may help regulate high blood pressure in some cases, but in others one or more medications will need to be adjusted.

For most men, if used as directed, Cardura XL greatly alleviates urinary symptoms associated with BPH with no serious side effects.
